Transformational homes - W85 (Wednesday 6:00 - 7:30pm)

Are homeowners doing more 'nesting' because of the economy? Maybe. Or maybe people just want to feel comfortable. Some days it's hard enough to feel comfortable in your own skin - let alone your home. This workshop sounds like it might be a more realistic version of those home makeover shows that we see everywhere on TV. Four professionals will lead us on a tour of dramatic (that's a TV word) transformations that have turned ugly ducklings into graceful swans. They mean the homes...not the homeowners. That's a different workshop.

Nesting in our home is exactly what we are doing, but with a twist. As we renovate and expand our home to last us for the long-term, we are also seizing the opportunity to truly green our house. Not just with green materials, but by making systemic changes to the envelope and HVAC system that will, we expect, reduce our heating demand by 60-70%. Through air sealing, 4 inches of exterior insulation, basement insulation, we can dramatically reduce our energy use. But the key is to contemplate this work as you undertake other projects, such as re-siding (where you can add insulation to the exterior)or finishing a basement (where you can really insulate and air seal) or roof replacement (where you can add insulation). This makes these efforts, if not cheap, certainly more cost effective.
